Wellsboro, a town of beauty and culture rich in natural resources and the County Seat of Tioga County, is a beautiful gas-lit town in the Endless Mountains which are part of the Northern Tier (approximately four hours from Philadelphia, five hours from Pittsburgh and three hours from Harrisburg). Founded in 1806 by settlers from Delaware, Maryland and Philadelphia, it was incorporated in 1830.
The town was named in honor of Mary Wells, wife of one of the original settlers, Benjamin Wister Morris. Noted for beautiful elms, maple trees and wide boulevards with gas lights, this is a village of pleasant homes and hospitable people.
If you are an outdoors enthusiast, you have come to the right place. Situated in approximately 160,000 acres of the Tioga State Forest lies the Grand Canyon of Pennsylvania. The Canyon begins south of Ansonia along US Route 6 and continues for approximately 47 miles. The maximum depth of the canyon is 1,450 feet at Waterville, near the southern end. At Leonard Harrison and Colton Point State Parks, the depth is more than 800 feet and from rim to rim is approximately 4,000 feet. These overlooks offer the most spectacular views. Enjoy hiking and biking along Pine Creek in beautiful Tioga County, as well as hunting, fishing, bird watching, birding, rafting, boating, hiking, snowmobiling and skiing.
If you love antiques, quilts and crafts, you will be in your glory here in Wellsboro. There are many wonderful finds in the stores of Main Street.
Select the restaurant of your choice before taking an old-fashioned train ride on the Tioga Central Railroad.
